California Pizza Kitchen: Four Cheese

I’m originally from California and as such have enjoyed eating at California Pizza Kitchen for quite a while.  I actually remember my first visit.  Freshman year of college, early 2001, a group of friends and I made the trek to Pasadena for what I was told was “fancy pizza.”  I wasn’t sure what to expect but what I found was so strange to me.  It was a pizza joint…But it was a pizza joint that looked very ritzy to me at the time.  I was used to more hole in the wall or chain pizza parlors.  This was not that.  This was high-end pizza and I was intrigued.  That night I had their signature BBQ Chicken Pizza and it blew my mind.  I’d never seen a BBQ Chicken pizza before.  It wasn’t all that common at the time.

Now we live in an age of custom pizzas.  Even places like Pizza Hut have taco pizzas, chicken Alfredo pizzas, and the like.  The days of a pizza place being supreme, pepperoni, cheese and nothing else are long gone.  I have to be honest, that makes me happy.  I still love old school pizzas, but sometimes a buffalo chicken pizza is a nice option!

However with the rise in strange and new pizza ideas, there has also been a rise in the California Pizza Kitchen, CPK for short.  These days the restaurants are all over the country and even the world.  They also have a line of frozen pizza products.  We have even already reviewed one here on the site!  This CPK review, from regular reviewer Heidi, is from one of their tamer pizzas.  Doesn’t make it any less delicious looking though, so let’s check out the FOUR CHEESE PIZZA!

It’s simplicity at it’s best.  When you’re offering up a four cheese you don’t need to go too crazy.  Something I appreciate is the thin crust.  I’m normally a thin crust (more New York Style) or regular crust type of guy.  When I’m ordering a pizza crispy thin crust really isn’t really my idea of a good time.  When it’s a frozen/microwaveable pizza though, I love crispy thin crust.  I’m not sure why, I just like the way it cooks in the microwave quite a bit more than I do the doughier crusts.  And this one looks great, LOTS of cheese covering just about the entire thing.  A little crust around the edge, but not much at all.  I dig it.  Let’s look at the real deal…

This looks fairly spot on with the box.  A LOT of cheese.  Just a little crust.  This is my kind of microwaveable pizza.  There looks to be a decent amount of sauce.  It’s not too much, not too little.  Juuuuuuuuust right.  CPK really knocks these things out of the park.  What did Heidi think?

The first place I had gone to when I visited some friends in LA was the California Pizza Kitchen. And from what I remember I loved it. So seeing a single serving of this delicious pizza was an awesome surprise! I ate the four cheese one and it was really good! It was thin crust and it managed to stay crispy in the microwave. Single pizzas ROCK! And this one is a good one.
